Weekend What's What 1/5-1/8

THURSDAY JANUARY 5TH

Stick Em Up!

@ David Paul Seymour Art + Design Gallery
Northrup King Building
1500 Jackson St. NE
Suite 429
Minneapolis

5 p.m. – 9 p.m. / Free

You know it’s time to replace the NKOTB sticker you’ve had plastered to your trapper keeper since junior high…and there’s no time like the present! There’s a new crop of high-design decals on the horizon that elevate the humble sticker to an art. Gallery owner and contributing artist David Paul Seymour is on the cusp of the emerging trend with the Twin Cities' first-ever all-sticker art showcase. This exciting show presents the work of a dozen local, national and international graphic designers, stencil-painters and sketch artists using thousands of one-of-a-kind stickers. Gallery patrons can stuff as many stickers as they can fit into a special collector’s sack for a measly $10 - how’s that for affordable art! In addition to the vast selection of decals, the artists will display customized three-dimensional “street” objects - such as payphones and street signs – to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Don’t be stuck up, get a peek at the emerging sticker art movement!

@ Varsity Theater
1308 4th St SE
Minneapolis

7 p.m. – 1 a.m. / 18+ / $8

Sometimes we dream about The Rope making a music video. We imagine something along the lines of Sisters of Mercy's This Corrosion; anarchic underground city dwellers, ubiquitous rain and metal, curled lips and lot and lots of leather. Well tonight, wonder no more as the boys from local dark-loving band, The Rope, shoot footage for their first music video. Peep live sets from local death rock purveyors, Safewords; indie rockers, Still Pacific; and dark ambient folk industrials, Blood and Sun, and be prepared to be filmed – this means don some epic goth duds. Who knows what lies beyond the camera's dark gaze?

THURSDAY JANUARY 5TH

Cum on Feel the Noize: Appetite for Destruction

@ Club Jager
923 Washington Ave N
Minneapolis

10 p.m. – 2 a.m. / 21+ / no cover

Oh, Axl! If you're anything like us, the bandanas, Cop shades, sleeveless tees, pouty lips, ripped pecs and dreamy long locks belonging the Guns N' Roses' badass frontman left you in your bedroom for hours upon hours...we mean due to listening to albums, of course. For this month's edition of Cum on Feel the Noize, “Appetite For Destruction,” feel free to openly embrace your love for the Rose as you jam out to your fave GN'R's tracks spun by CFN resident DJ Danielle Morris and guest rocker Christy Hunt (Pink Mink, Ouija Radio, Von Bondies). Belt out lyrics and bust classic air guitar moves for paradigm GN'R hits like “Night Train,” “Paradise City” and “Welcome to the Jungle” and grab a sexy bar stranger to slow dance to that cry-me-a-river love ballad, “Sweet Child O' Mine.” Sip down delish drinks from l'etoile + Jager star baby, Robyn Lewis, and raise a glass to the rockstar sauve enough to make his moniker an anagram of a sex act term...you figure it out. From butt rock to metal, hair bands to scare bands, there's only one dance night where the ladies of the decks have the balls to blast it all, sans any ounce of shame. CFN, we tip our teased hair to you.

@ Altered Esthetics
1224 Quincy St. NE

The always intriguing artistic process is the subject of this fascinating exhibit from Altered Esthetics. Process work by the gallery’s resident artists shows how the initial seeds of an idea is nurtured to fully formed works. Personal sketchbooks, in progress photos, design notes, and storyboards give a glimpse into the creative mind and also reveal how much painstaking work goes into creating a ‘work of art’. It’s always inspiring to get a peek at the process of a great artist, so don’t miss your chance to delve into the artistic mind.
