THURSDAY DECEMBER 16TH

Camelot is Crumbling & Idiosynchronicity

@ The Peoples' Theater
425 20th Ave S
Minneapolis

7:30pm (Camelot) & 9pm (Idiosynchronicity) / $12 (or $9 if you attend both shows) Excuse us while we gush about one of our own. Occassional l'etoile contributor and sci-fi novelist, Rob Callahan, is a favorite among local hipster-nerd circles. He's well-known for being a super nice dude AND for dressing like Dr. Who. Long story short, Callahan is someone we think everyone ought to know - on both a personal and professional level. Tonight (and
through Sunday) Rob will re-present his hit Fringe Fest show Idiosynchronicity, backed up once again by multi-talented musican, Jonah the Destroyer. Idiosynchronicity is an experience our Fringe reviewer called "an evening of literary madness, pop culture jabs and broodingly funny short tales in masterful Callahan quip." We'll just sum it up in three and a half words: Sci-Fi Beat Poetry! Kicking off this double-whammy bill is Maximum Verbosity's post-apocolyptic, medievally-influenced play penned by Rockstar Storyteller phillip andrew bennett low and inspired by the works of Sir Thomas Malory. Tickets to each individual performance are $12, but buy a ticket for both for just $9 each.

See them Thursday at Honey, where they’ll be joined by club punk three-piece Chelsea Boys; Dial Up, self described as “what Beck would sound like if he grew up in Berlin,” and a handful of DJ sets.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 18TH

MPLS

@ Cult Status Galllery
2913 Harriet Ave S.
Minneapolis

7 p.m. / Free

The guidelines for MPLS, opening Saturday at Cult Status, were simple: any art inspired by the life, culture, landscapes, and energy of our fair city. The submissions that poured in, however, capture even the most subtle of reasons why Minneapolis is a hands down spectacular artistic destination. Not that we’re surprised or anything; perhaps the only thing more badass than the city itself are the artists who call it home, and this show will represent a number of them, both seasoned and up-and-coming. So go ahead, relish the night away. Heaven knows we can’t celebrate our city’s awesomeness enough.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: BATH

What's l'etoile listening to this week?

“It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence,” quips “Mazimalist,” the woozy, hard-hitting single from Baths’ debut album Cerulean. The new identity of the classically-trained 21-year-old L.A. resident and Björk obsessive Will Wisenfenld (formerly Post-Foetus), Baths creates a mixtape-like labyrinth of soundscapes; beats are chopped, glitched, disjointed, splattered with surreal ambiances and bursts of dreamy falsetto (think Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos, only less whiny) – pretty little heart-on-your-sleeve vignettes about universals like forbidden love and human connection. Listening to it is like staring at the sky from the bottom of a pool, going up for air at the last possible minute, and diving right back in. Talk about an essence that not only radiates, but burns.
