MAEP Opening Reception + Third Thursday Party

@ MIA
2400 Third Ave. S.
Minneapolis

6-9 pm / free

Don't miss the MAEP opening reception featuring new works from artists Tetsuya Yamada and Michael Kareken. In Yamada's multimedia installation piece, "Commuter," the artist explores the lines between public and private spaces. His installation – inspired by daily train rides in his native city - examines the human/machine relationship while celebrating the mechanical rhythms involved in everyday routine. Kareken's latest series of oil paintings, Scrap, were influenced by the Rock-Tenn recycling plant – as seen from his studio window – and features “lovingly rendered refuse heaps” and dramatic “monochromatic studies of twisted metal.”

While you're at the MIA, drop down to the museum-wide, free Third Thursday event: Ooh la Louvre! from 6-9 pm. Tour the museum's monumental exhibit The Louvre and the Masterpiece, donned in your best beret and humming your favorite Edith Piaf ballad; attend “Six-Pack,” a series of six 10-minute talks on artwork in the exhibit's sister show, In Pursuit of a Masterpiece; and even enter to win dinner for two at Barbette! Plus, enjoy cocktails and a live set from local indie-pop band, the Hopefuls. As if we needed more reasons to heart the MIA!

FRIDAY ART PICK: RYOHEI HASE

Call us creeps, but we kind of want to make out with Ryohei Hase. His crushingly violent paintings of animal-human hybrids clawing and intertwining have a sort of sexual vibe that's both scary and mesmerizing. Based in Tokyo, this young artist claims his paintings express "the darkness of mind which is sad and gloomy but at the same time beautiful and strong." Also an accomplished digital illustrator, Hase has an extensive portfolio which includes not only paintings, but also eye-poppin' commercial and print work. Love!

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20TH

Art Bar

@ Mill City Café
2205 California St NE
Minneapolis

5pm-1am/free

Artist Aldo Moroni has been makin' creative magic since we were mere twinkles in our hippie parents' eyes. And it just so happens that Moroni is feeling a bit of nostalgia for the Stevens Gallery Co-op where "Dogs ran through the gallery and hippies stumbled into the franklin stove, knocking the bean stew onto the floor. Pregnant women lounged along the window sills in Mama Cass moo moo’s and bad poets exchanged lines in the smoke filled gallery." His first show was 35 years ago this month, so join Aldo and friends for cheap drinks and music of the times. This party is sure to be filled to the brim with quirky, opinionated old artists, who incidentally, are our favorites.

MCAD Art Sale

@ MCAD
2501 Stevens Avenue
Minneapolis

Friday: 6-9pm / $40
Saturday: 9am-5pm / Free

Ah, the MCAD Art Sale. The art hunter's dream come true. Each year the school holds the biggest art sale in the Twin Cities within their sprawling halls, featuring over 7,000 pieces up for grabs. What's better? Every piece is priced under $1000, with the average price being under $100. So, for budding and established art collectors alike, the MCAD art sale is a god's honest art gold mine. Scour the premises for fresh new talent to adorn your walls with -- you may just discover the next big thing! Personally, we can spend hours nitpicking through this amazing sale; the size and scope of it is simply, wonderfully maddening. Friday's preview includes a $40 admission that allows you first chance at getting your paws on the goods (warning, there could be eye-gouging involved), while Saturday the doors open to the public with free admission. Our advice? Wear a nut cup; collectors do not mess around at the MCAD Art Sale.

10pm-2am

Crazy dance party alert! This Friday night the cool cats at Burlesque of North America team up with two on-fire female DJs from the NYC: Star Eyes (Trouble & Bass) and Jubilee (Nightshifters/Flashing Lights). This Friday's "secret location" extravaganza is billed as a "spaced-out bass odyssey" and brings to mind the good old rave-days with a stylized, girl-fueled twist. We've been harboring a hard lady-crush on Ms. Star Eyes, whose appearance last year at Burlesque's "Do It To It" blow out at First Avenue got us all in a twitter with her combo of swarthy good looks and epic noise-bringing abilities. And Jubilee, though new to our ears, has easily added herself to our list of cool girls on which to obsess. Friday's bash also includes the ghetto tech stylings of Bitch Ass Darius and the funky breakdowns of Mike 2600. Add yourself to Burlesque's mailing list HERE to be alerted to the secret party location!

BONUS: The girls are currently on a mini-tour, enroute to Minneapolis, but they took a few minutes to answer a few of our pressing questions via e-mail. Click HERE to read our interview with Star Eyes and Jubilee!

Billed as a "costume contest in the center of your face," Stachefest will feature prizes for the best real and fake mustaches as well as killer tunes from Sam Keenan, Pretty Ugly, Hot Ashes, Jonathan Ackerman, The Sexbots, and Attitude City.

COOL LINK: CHANDI LANCASTER

There's been a lot of Full House-related nostalgic prattle between the l'etoile girls lately –- and we're not afraid to admit it! When we discovered that the new line from Brooklyn-based clothing designer Chandi Lancaster screamed "Kimmy Gibbler," we couldn't help but share. With a few odd notches under her belt including an appearance on the early '90s Ricki Lake talk show as well as the apparel line she started in 1996, scandalously named “CUNT Clothing,” Chandi might as well be Gibbler's long lost twin. Her kooky design style matches gaudy fabrics and prints and features cutout bandage dresses, onesies, bike shorts and random screenprint tees full of clocks, fangs and wild animals, creating a line she claims would make the girls of In Living Color damn proud. Full House? In Living Color? Sounds like a hot '90s mess we wouldn't mind putting on our bodies.

GUEST BLOGGER: A TINY MACHINE

Beth Hammarlund raves about "The Quickies" now on stage at the Bryant Lake Bowl.

Enjoy a quickie this weekend

Last weekend I attended the second performance of Quickies 2009 at Bryant Lake Bowl. I'd missed Quickies 2008, but the buzz had been overwhelmingly positive. After a few beers, I went into the theater in good spirits and excited for a night of inexpensive theatre that didn't require me to dress up or sit in a seat for two and a half hours. Quickies delivered, and I found myself not only laughing out loud, but also unexpectedly touched by the material.

Le'TALK: Star Eyes & Jubilee

Crazy dance party alert! This Friday night the cool cats at Burlesque of North America team up with two on-fire female DJs from the NYC: Star Eyes (Trouble & Bass) and Jubilee (Nightshifters/Flashing Lights). This weekend's "secret location" extravaganza is billed as a "spaced-out bass odyssey" and brings to mind the good old rave-days with a stylized, girl-fueled twist. We've been harboring a hard lady-crush on Ms. Star Eyes, whose appearance last year at Burlesque's "Do It To It" blow out at First Avenue got us all in a twitter with her combo of swarthy good looks and epic noise-bringing abilities. Friday's bash also includes the ghetto tech stylings of Bitch Ass Darius and the funky breakdowns of Mike 2600. Add yourself to Burlesque's mailing list HERE to be alerted to the secret party location!

The girls are currently on a mini-tour, enroute to Minneapolis, but they took a few minutes to answer a few of our pressing questions via e-mail:

Star Eyes, Last time you were in Minneapolis you made quite the impact. What have you been up to since we last danced to your jams?

Woo, so much. I released my "Disappear" EP on Trouble & Bass in June with a ton of remixes and a video. In the same month, I quit my day job at XLR8R. I've toured Europe and the US with T&B crew and by myself, drank a lot of whiskey, and worn a lot of silly costumes. Currently, I'm writing spooky songs, learning how to make Count Chocula synth sounds, and freaking out at Bad Manor with Jubilee and Dre Skull and all our assorted vibe props.

Jubilee, what are some of your major projects as of late?

After this tour I am going to work on sleeping... and maybe eating a salad or 2 instead of a burger or BBQ pulled pork sandwich. That will be my first project. Then I am going to finish a record I recently started with another DJ/Producer that I've always wanted to work with. More on that closer to when it is finished. I am also working on getting a pod cast up very soon. Hopefully by the New Year.

What's your connection and how do you compliment each other?

We have a high-speed internet connection. I mean, we're some of the only girl DJs in our "scene" so we like to get together and talk about, like, "our cycles" and past lives and stuff like that. We mostly compliment each other on our hair or our shoes or doing dope mixes. We also both like animal hats and animated gifs so, I mean, we get along pretty well.

Star Eyes, You previously held the position of Editor at XLR8R Magazine, are you still working in journalism or are you focused on your career as a DJ at the moment?

I'm focused on DJing and making music right now. As previously mentioned, I left XLR8R in June and I really haven't done any writing since then, although I expect I'll do some more in the future, possibly fiction this time around, since I have a lot of crazy stories that I need to commit to paper while I still remember them.

Jubilee, what other things do you have your fingers into?

I have pretty much focused my entire life on music. It's kind of scary, I am not gonna lie. But it's exciting too. It's the only thing in my life that I have ever given 100% to. That's how I know I am doing the right thing.

What are both of your predictions for what's hot and what's not in music and fashion in 2010?

Jubilee: 2010 is looking good to me. Messy electro seems to be fading quickly and a lot of people are changing their sound to more of a housey vibe. Also the fact that artists such as Joy Orbison, Untold and Cooly G are getting alot of hype make me pretty happy about where 2010 may go. I hope it keeps up. As far as fashion goes, hoodies and dirty jeans will always be in style to me. I am never up on fashion. I still dress like I did when I was 14. Except my pants are way tighter. And I made some of those oversized basketball jerseys into dresses.

Star Eyes: Man, 2010. I think people are going to continue on this Mayan shaman psychic trip as we lead up to 2012; you know, some Illuminati shit mixed with Central American motifs. Black, capes, bats, creepers (the shoes), and more of the stuff that I thought was going to be big in 2009 but is just starting. Not all at once, but I think these things will be big fashion-wise: different kinds of leggings (more slouchy, better fabrics), Mishka, Peggy Noland, dressing like a pilgrim, Actual Pain, thigh high socks, this modern rockabilly look for guys is going to continue (and I certainly hope it does). Musically, I think every song will come with like 12 different remixes, and dubstep will continue to grow and become the new (better) hip-hop. I will continue to enjoy music that sounds like midnight voodoo ceremonies and equatorial zombie uprisings, as channeled by Chicago, London, and Detroit.

What can people expect at the secret location party this Friday?

Jubilee: Those Brooklyn sounds, maybe some Pitbull, classic rave jams, songs telling you to do certain dance moves, Jagerbombs?

Star Eyes: Songs about Blackberrys and iPhones, big bass tunes, sexy slow dances, the splits, and Pokemon speaker humping.

To get the skinny on this weekend's party, you'll need to sign up on Burlesque's e-mail list to receive an alert that details the secret location. Visit http://burlesquedesign.com/newsletter/subscribe.htm to sign up!

The night features dual dance sets of 80's minimal, dark new wave, foreign synth-pop, fierce electro, synth-rock, and a few tracks straight from the original movie soundtracks – Alan Parsons Project anyone?! – set to the fantasy backdrop of sci-fi adventure flicks Westworld and Ladyhawke. Don't miss fantastic drink specials and epic dancing all night long. Did we mention Yul Brynner's face gets melted off with hydrochloric acid in an infamous Westworld scene? If that's not entertainment you can dance to, we don't know what is!

See everything from photography to sculpture to paintings to mixed media and everything in between in the metro's largest annual group show. Show up before 8pm and vote for your favorite piece for the "People's Choice" award, snack on delicious fare provided by the Red Stag Supper Club, and yuck it up with fabulously eccentric artsy types from all over Northeast. Our own Kate Iverson is the producer of this annual community event and NEMAA's resident PR guru, so it's definitely at the top of our list this Friday. One of Kate's own cheeky photo works will be on display as well.

Other Northeast group art events tonight and this weekend: Caché at the Casket: Casket Arts' annual holiday sale featuring its bevy of local artists and artisans. Go Friday for live blues from Lonesome Dan Kase, food from our fave caterers Chowgirls, and a silent auction. (5-10 p.m. Fri. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. 681 17th Av. NE., Mpls.) California Building also hosts its Second Saturdays open studio this weekend (2205 California Street NE, 11-6pm Saturday)

Robyne Robinson & Patty Paulus Opening Reception

@ Frank Stone Gallery
1224 2nd Street NE

Tonight's opening reception is the perfect precursor to an evening of arting in Northeast (with perhaps a stop in at our latest obsession, Anchor Fish and Chips, just up the block). On Saturday, head to Spalon Montage to get a glimpse of the designs Robinson created for "Project Runway" designer Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman's Fashion Week show this past fall. (Noon-5 p.m. Sat. 3909 W. 49th St., Edina.)

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 14TH

@ 1419
1419 Washington Ave. S.
Minneapolis

7-11 pm/ free

In the midst of economic woes and a housing market downturn, many Americans have turned into Bob Vila, ransacking the nearest Home Depot for DIY home repair fodder. Inspired by the artist context of this craze, the six emerging artists in “Walls Were So Last Year” have created original artwork using everyday materials found at home-improvement stores for an exhibit that challenges the concepts of “high art” and materialism. Artists include: TJ Barnes, Miles Mendenhall, Broc Blegen, Jon Duff, Alex Schluender, Sarah Baker and Nick Rummler. During the exhibit's showcase span, 1419 will unveil its new street-level gallery space where art, video and performance work by local artists will be viewable 24 hours a day.

FEAST

@ Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art
250 3rd Avenue North #115
Minneapolis Warehouse District

6pm/$10–20 cash donation, no one turned away

So you want to be an art patron, but don’t have thousands? After tonight’s FEAST (Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics) you can start using the title of "benefactor," because you’ll be supporting local art in all the right ways. Your donation at the door gets you a ballot and some dinner; you’ll dine with some of the city’s interesting and ambitious artists, art lovers, and patrons. Artists will propose projects that need funding and whichever gets the most votes will be awarded the profits from this evening’s soiree, and will present their project at the next FEAST. Talk about a sustainable art community!

Bonus: Meander the halls of Traffic Zone after your feastings, as a seasonal open studio event accompanies tonight's festivities.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 14TH

Heavy Petting

@ The Gallery at Fox Tax
503 1st Avenue NE
Minneapolis

6pm-11pm / Free

Ah, Rob McBroom. From the moment we first encountered you, we knew you were an odd one. Odd in the most fantastical, sequined, glittered, and wonderfully whacked out way possible, of course. A longtime favorite of l'étoile, McBroom's been layin' low lately, so tonight's opening at the Gallery at Fox Tax is a wickedly momentous occasion in our opinion. Twelve new 3' by 3' works by the most meticulous mixed media artist in Minneapolis, McBroom's entire collection is based on Edward Lear's nonsensical 1871 poem "The Owl & The Pussycat." Of course, McBroom's current interpretations may take a more, er, "Adult" spin on things, if we know him at all. Throw in his staple "pop culture hoo-haw, candy colored whim whams & sparkly doo-dads" and you've got not only a dazzling visual representation before you, but also numerous, thought-provoking art puzzles that you'll have a ridiculous amount of fun examining and deciphering. If there's to be one art opening on your list this weekend, let it be this.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: ZOLA JESUS

We have a bit of a girl crush on Wisconsin-based Zola Jesus (aka Nika Roza Danilova) and it's not just cuz she's got the voice of a dark angel and the face of a brazen vixen, or the fact that she lives close enough to stalk. Her latest LP, The Spoils, (released late this summer on Sacred Bones Records) features the creative talents of a seasoned musical genius trapped in the body of a 20 year old. Zola Jesus' low-fi, distorted goth-pop sound combines haunting vocals and truly disparaging lyrics with a twinge of rebellion and a subtly air of innocence – a mixture only a youth could pull off. In the video for the single, “Clay Bodies,” Zola pays homage to the famous French short film director, Man Ray, as she takes on the role of Kiki de Montparnasse, romping around like an ethereal renegade through Detroit's most ornate abandoned spaces. This track makes us want to break down in a neo-Victorian bedroom, our mascara heavily smudged, wearing only a tattered Betsey Johnson gown...but that's just us.
